The singing of the Star is an important tradition widespread throughout the Alps: it is still very rooted in Valle Sabbia and Alto Garda, where almost every village has its own group linked to the celebration.
The tradition of Star Singing dates back to the Counter-Reformation period to counter Protestantism, which questioned the existence of Saints. It is a pilgrimage through the streets of the villages, singing and carrying the traditional paper star as the only light, a metaphor of the Star that led the Three Kings to Jesus.
In some countries there is also the custom, during the journey, to collect donations for charity.
During the pilgrimage from village to village, is a use of singers to drink broth or mulled wine to warm up. After completing the tour in the late of the night, is offered a dinner (usually of polenta) to singers.
