CHURCH OF THE SAINT APOSTLES PIETRO AND PAOLO
The church was erected over a preceding chapel that was under the authority of the monastery of Serle.
The works of construction started on the 26th May, 1754. However, due to the exiguousness of the resources, the works of completion were endless and the initial plan changed many times.
Nowadays, the structure is characterised by a longitudinal nave with a regular plant presbytery, four lateral chapels which preserve minor altars dedicated to Saint Antonio, Addolorata, Rosario and Sacred Heart. The chapels alternate with niches which host the Baptistery, the Appearance of the Virgin in the cave of Lourdes, the confessionals and the lateral entrances. The ceiling is supported by transversal round arches that set rectangular spans covered by elliptic vaults with gables. The architectonic pattern of the lateral walls and the presbytery is shaped by pilasters with stucco supporting the trabeation that follow the internal perimeter of the edifice. The gables of the vaults include frescoed squares framed with valuable stuccos.
In the zone of the presbytery, more elevated than the nave, is the main altar realized by skilled artisans coming from the area of Botticino or Verle. The elegant marble intarsia draft polychrome volutes and panels repeating decorative modules that recall the typical style of the province of Brescia in the 18th century. Two of the minor altars are coeval with the main altar and are inspired with the same shapes and colours of the stones (the white marble of Botticino, the red marble of Verona and green called “atico”) which possibly belonged to the preceding church.
To the left and to the right of the Communion two balconies are suspended. They host the choir and the pipe organ and are made by stucco and decorated with fake marble patterns and golden walls. They were a work by Bortolo Lazzari in 1840.
The pipe organ was made by Giovanni Tonoli and is located “in Cornu Epistolare” with prospect in three pyramidal spans. The central one is shaped by seven pipes, while the two lateral ones are shaped by nine pipes. All this is included in wooden frame with marble and stucco.
Over the main altar is located a graceful altar-piece of the 16th century, portraying a Madonna with the Infant between Saint Pietro and Saint Paolo. The throne on which the Virgin is seated is a rustic high-backed chair shaped by wooden timber with a dark fabric outstretched between the arms as a back.
There is a painting of good workmanship that some experts attribute to the school of Romanino. Two other important paintings are set over the altars dedicated to the Addolorata and Saint Antonio. Both present evident integrations. This lets us suppose that they came from the old parish church and were adapted to the wider soasas by stucco of the new chapels. The Deposition of the 16th century portrays the shattered Madonna who sustains the body of the Son with a dramatic expression on her visage.
The chapel dedicated to the Saint Rosary presents an image of the Virgin Mary in painted wood. Around the statue there are 15 ovals with stucco frame which tell the episodes of the life of the Madonna. The parish also conserves four statues in plaster portraying the Evangelists.
The façade was made around the year 1810, according the sacred canons of the 18th and 19th century in the province of Brescia. Horizontally, it is divided in two levels by a moulding while, vertically, it is divided into three parts by pilasters with Corinthian chapels in stucco. The inferior part is wider and is joined with the superior one through volutes. In the middle is the elegant portal made of stone by Botticino and planned by the architect Antonio Vigliari in 1821.
