Faunas

The marine life is not rich with different species as with the other lakes of the province of Brescia. The existing marine life is a result of the vicissitudes, which have over the years contributed to the disappearance and reduction of the diverse species of fish that once inhabited the lake, and from the introduction of species, which were extraneous and not naturally found in this area. In the SALMONOID family it is possible to fish: the Fario trout, a local kind of trout with a slim body covered with small scales. This species of fish is being substituted by the Iridea trout, which was introduced in the 1970’s. This type of trout is not able to reproduce naturally and the stocks of this fish need to be replenished yearly.

The Lavaret (Coregonus lavaretus) was introduced to Lake Idro in the 1930’s. The Luce is part of the family of the ESOCITI and it is endemic of the lake. There is also the Triotto, a small fish from the family of CIPRINIDI which can reach up to 15cm in length, and the Chub (Leuciscus cephalus), which is endemic and lives in numerous groups around the lake. The Vairone is a local fish of modest size living along the lake. The Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) is a tiny fish with an olive colour that is found in all of the lake. The Tench is typical of these waters and has a body covered with mucus, its mouth is characterised with whiskers. The Rudd (Scardinius erythrophathalmus), is a common fish of the lake which has a high body covered with large silver scales. The Bleak (Alburnus albidus) is a small and variegated fish with a grey-green back and is diffused in all of the lake. The Carp is a fish of large size with a fleshy mouth and whiskers. The Eel is a long snake-like and slippery fish, which lives in all of the lake and every year replenished with stocks. The Burbot (or Ling), which belongs to the family of GADIDI, was introduced to the lake only in 1970. Finally, there is the Real Perch, which belongs to the family of PERCIDI and was introduced a long time ago. The Perch is used in delicious meals and for this reason it is extremely appreciated.
